Mangalore/Fujairah: Thumbay Hospital Fujairah has reported encouraging results following an awake lumbar spine fusion procedure performed on a patient suffering from sciatica, reinforcing its specialised services in spine and pain management.
The procedure was carried out by Dr Hillol Kanti Pal, Consultant Neurosurgeon, with support from Dr Azharuddin Mohammad and Dr Ravindra Reddy, Specialists in Anesthesiology, along with the hospital’s operation theatre team.
Awake lumbar spine fusion is performed in carefully selected patients who remain awake or receive controlled sedation during key stages of surgery. Maintaining communication with the patient can provide additional clinical feedback and complement conventional intraoperative neuromonitoring, according to the hospital.
Dr Pal said awake spine fusion, when performed in appropriately selected cases, can provide an additional layer of neurological assessment during surgery, as the patient’s responses offer real-time clinical feedback. He added that the procedure at Thumbay Hospital Fujairah also involves the simultaneous use of two C-arm fluoroscopy systems, which helps reduce operative time and the requirement for anaesthetic drugs while facilitating patient cooperation.
For patients with sciatica, Dr Pal follows a structured treatment approach involving clinical assessment, diagnostic imaging and targeted pain-management procedures. Minimally invasive decompression and fusion may be considered for patients who do not obtain adequate relief through conservative or appropriate interventional treatment and have an underlying structural spinal condition.
Dr Akbar Thumbay, Vice President of Thumbay Healthcare, said the outcome reflected the expertise and close coordination among the hospital’s surgical, anaesthesia and operation theatre teams.
He added that the hospital would continue to strengthen specialised spine care, with patient selection, individualised treatment and safety remaining key considerations.
